The author suggests that interviewing and conferencing with students during math workshop is just as important as during reading workshop!
Pre assessments are SO important in creating guided math groups. Some suggestions for pre assessments are:
- oral questions
- fact quizes
I love pre-assessments so much that I created my own set of pre and post assessments for grouping students. It really helps to see which students already understand the concept and which students need more work! This way, I can run my small groups at a pace that keeps them engaged 100% of the time!
Another type of assessing Dr. Nicki suggests using is ongoing assessments during the unit. This can be done by using:
- observations at centers
- notes during guided reading
- questions, interviews, or conferences
- using graphic organizers
For quick assessments I have made this snapshot page (for older grades). It's just a quick, easy way to see how students are doing. It's also a great way to share progress with families. I found that without all of the worksheets/math sheets going home, parents are wondering what is going on during workshop time! Fill it out, keep it or send it home. I tried to do this at least twice a month!
