We had such a fun day in 8th grade this week. We are wrapping up our Civil War unit as the year is starting to wind down. As we are getting finished I brought in hardtack for the students to experience!
In our unit we learned that hardtack was eaten by the Union soldiers. We actually read a really great article about how it was made and the bugs in it! It totally fascinated the 8th graders, so Jen volunteered to make some for them to try (minus the bugs of course)!
As you can see from the recipe card that I gave to all of the students (along with their wax paper wrapped small sample of the hardtack) it is made with just flour, salt and water! Ummm... yummy?

I don't normally post student pictures (I like to maintain their privacy), but take my word for it their faces were priceless. They will FOREVER remember hardtack and the struggles that they Union soldiers faced!
